Chapter 13

Minutes stretched into hours, which stretched into days, until I lost all concept of time.

I struggled out of bed occasionally, to use the bathroom or grab something to eat, so I wouldn't starve. Then I climbed directly back into my bed, pulled the covers over my head, and slipped away into dreams.

After the first night, which had been filled with nightmares, I'd brewed strong pots of the tea Dr. Bennett had sent and had subsisted on that and peanut butter and jam sandwiches ever since.

When I was awake, I cried. It was a good thing I was a wolf, because, if I didn't heal quickly, the skin on my cheeks would be raw from the tears I let fall and occasionally wiped away. As it was, my skin was tight and sore from the salt that was now simply a part of who I was.

My body ached, and I knew it would make a world of difference if I just got out of bed, did some stretches, or went for a run. But that all sounded like too much. I was drained of energy, life, and hope.

I replayed every moment I'd spent or not spent with Alyssa during her time here at Beta Wolf Academy then hated myself for not being there for her. Like I should've been.

I'd failed her, majorly. My mind kept skipping back to the conversation I had with Rose and the weight of expectation of all the girls looking up to her for answers. She was our rock, our go-to person. I'd been that person for Alyssa, and I'd shirked that duty. I couldn't imagine Rose walking away from that responsibility. She'd never once ignored any of my questions. I’d have been lost without her, which was exactly what I'd done to Alyssa.

The pain of that knowledge and awareness scored something deep inside me and broke the faith and trust I had in the fact that I was a good person at the core of my being. How could I be a good person if I'd only thought of myself first?

I sat in the darkness, with my curtains pulled over the windows to block out any moonlight. I didn't deserve the comfort of the moon, not when Alyssa's blood stained my hands and her death lay heavy on my soul.

Every breath was a struggle, every moment. I was alive while she was dead. It was—unthinkable. I curled into myself in the corner of my bed, unable to even cry anymore. It was as if my body was drained of even that small relief. The rage and agony inside me, built, layering one over the other until it was just too much. I couldn't—

My fingernails pierced the skin on my palms, sending flashes of sharp pain through me. The physical expression of the pain I felt inside soothed me, just the tiniest bit, as if pulling it outside of my mind and soul was better than keeping it all locked up inside me.
